Miyagawa KōzanⅠ(1842~1916)

 Born in Makuzugahara, Kyōto, in 1842, the fourth son of Raku Chōzō, he opened his first kiln in Ōta-mura, Yokohama, in 1871. In 1876, He won an award at the Philadelphia World's Fair, and went on to win numerous prizes at international and domestic expositions.In 1896, he became the second person in the world of ceramics to be appointed as an Imperial Household Artist. Of the five pieces of modern and contemporary ceramic art designated as National Important Cultural Properties, two of them (褐釉蟹貼付台付鉢 and 黄釉錆絵梅樹文大瓶, both in the collection of the Tōkyō National Museum) are works by Miyagawa Kōzan I.
